Overview

Tom Swift is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father. Tom takes to the road on a quest to unravel the truth, leaving behind the comforts of his usual moneyed lifestyle, all while fighting to stay one step ahead of an Illuminati-scale group hell-bent on stopping him.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 42 /100

Tom Swift arrived with praise for its milestone representation, featuring an openly gay lead played by Tian Richards and positive inclusion of diverse identities, including a Black trans character. However, critical appraisal of the actual execution was largely underwhelming.

Reviewers felt the spinoff bogged down its charismatic star in network clichés, stilted dialogue, and muddled science fiction jargon that felt more like magic than sound plotting. Described by some as an unfocused misfire that failed to reinvent its network formula, the show struggled to generate momentum and was canceled after a single season.

“The CW’s ‘Nancy Drew’ Spinoff, Buries Its Charming Lead in Clichés”

“Most of the dialogue feels pointless and when the series tries to develop its science fiction theme, it really goes into endless jargon.”

“Giving a Black trans-man a love story is great for representation on network TV.”
