Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 65 /100

Critical reception for NieR:Automata Ver1.1a is mixed, often focusing on its relationship to the original video game source material. While some viewers find it to be a compelling substitute that captures the drama and action of the franchise, particularly in its later episodes, others feel it lacks the impact of the original experience.

Negative sentiment suggests that audiences looking for specific thematic depth might find better alternatives elsewhere. Overall, the series is viewed as an interesting attempt to adapt the game's narrative, though it struggles to fully replicate the unique engagement found in playing the source material.

“If you can’t be bothered to put in the time to get all 26 endings for the game... it remains a compelling substitute.”

“Nier: Automata Ver1.1a perfectly showed off its writing talents with episode #21.”

“If you’re interested in the theme... I suggest you go for 86:Eighty Six instead of NieR:Automata Ver1.1a.”

Why fans love it

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a finds its strength in a somber exploration of artificial life. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where humanity relies on androids to reclaim a planet lost to machine lifeforms, the series resists the pace of a typical action show. Instead, it lingers on the existential friction between programmed duty and the unintended emergence of individual awareness, creating a tone that feels as heavy as it does expansive.

While the story is rooted in the mechanics of a video game, the adaptation anchors its premise in the earnest performances of its voice cast, including Yui Ishikawa. The narrative avoids easy victories in favor of a cyclical conflict that highlights the futility and repetition inherent in a war fought by machines. For those interested in how animation can translate complex, melancholic themes into a sci-fi framework, the series serves as a deliberate dissection of what it means to be a weapon designed to serve a missing master.
